How do recall alerts work?
RecallRadar checks official government recall feeds in the background and compares new recalls against your watchlist and your Garage. A recall that mentions a watched item, or matches one of your vehicles, always triggers a notification. In Settings you can also turn on alerts for urgent recalls in general.
Notifications are generated on your iPhone. There is no server on our side deciding what you see.
I scanned a barcode and no recall was found. Is the product safe?
Not necessarily, and the app is honest about that. Most government recall notices do not include barcode numbers, so a clean scan means no recall notice with that exact barcode exists in the data, nothing more.
The real power of scanning is what happens next: keep the barcode on your watchlist, give it a name you recognize, and RecallRadar will alert you if that barcode ever appears in a future recall.
Why do some recalls have photos and maps and others do not?
Each agency publishes different information. CPSC recalls (toys, tools, electronics, household goods) almost always include official product photos. USDA and many FDA recalls include distribution details, which power the state map. Vehicle recalls are nationwide by nature.
RecallRadar shows everything a source provides and never pads recalls with stock imagery. When a section is missing, the agency did not publish that data.
How often does the app check for new recalls?
Every time you open the app or pull to refresh, and periodically in the background. iOS decides the exact background schedule based on your usage patterns and battery, typically a few times a day. Keep Background App Refresh enabled for the most timely alerts.
My vehicle shows no recalls. Is that right?
It means NHTSA has no open recall campaigns on file for that year, make, and model. That is good news. Your Garage is checked again on every refresh, so if a campaign is ever announced for your vehicle you will be alerted.
Adding by VIN is the most precise option. If a VIN will not decode, double check the 17 characters or add the vehicle manually.
Does RecallRadar work offline?
Yes. Everything already fetched stays available offline, including your watchlist and Garage. New recalls require a connection, and a banner tells you if any source could not be reached.
How do I delete my data?
Swipe to remove individual watchlist items or vehicles at any time. Since all data lives only on your iPhone, deleting the app removes everything. There is nothing stored anywhere else, so there is nothing else to delete.
Is this an official government app?
No. RecallRadar is an independent app that presents public recall data published by FDA, USDA FSIS, CPSC, and NHTSA. Always verify details with the official agency notice, which is linked from every recall in the app.
Notifications not arriving?
- In RecallRadar, open Settings and make sure New recall alerts is on.
- In iOS Settings > Notifications > RecallRadar, confirm notifications are allowed.
- In iOS Settings > General > Background App Refresh, confirm it is enabled for RecallRadar.
- Open the app once after changing these. iOS learns your usage and schedules background checks accordingly.
Seeing a "some sources unavailable" banner? A government feed is temporarily down or unreachable. Your cached recalls remain, and the source is retried on the next refresh.
